A wine-unit repair is meant to be finished on the visit that diagnoses it. When it cannot be, the reason is nearly always a part that has to be ordered, and on Mercer Island that turns one job into two trips over I-90, with your collection sitting in the gap.

Why some parts travel and others are ordered

Parts that fail often and are shared across many units can come with us once the phone call has narrowed down the fault. Parts matched to one model family cannot all be carried. A control board is the usual example: it is tested before it is condemned, then ordered against the model and serial on your rating plate so the replacement matches the one that came out. Whatever we fit is a genuine Sub-Zero part.

Nothing is ordered until you have the repair price and have said yes to it.

What the unit does in the meantime

Before we leave, you are told which of three states the unit is in, and why.

Left running. If it is still cooling, even imperfectly, a closed cabinet that is running usually does more for the bottles than one that is off or open.

Switched off. When keeping it running could make the fault worse, it is switched off at its own control panel, and you are told so.

Running on one zone. Each zone of a Sub-Zero wine cooler is cooled by its own evaporator, which means one zone can keep holding while its neighbor drifts. The bottles in the drifting zone are the ones to watch, or to move.

What to do with the collection itself has its own note: protecting a collection while the unit is down.

The second visit

The second visit fits the part and then proves the repair: both zones probed against the display, the unit watched through a few on and off cycles, the door checked for an even seal. The repair price agreed before the part was ordered is the price of the repair. It is the closing step of the wine storage repair that began with the diagnosis.

Before you call

  1. Step 1

Keep the unit in the state we left it

Left running, keep it running; switched off at the control panel, leave it off. Flipping between the two hides what the fault is doing.

  2. Step 2

Read a probe in each zone twice a day

One probe per zone, standing in water on a middle rack. Note the reading and the clock time each morning and each evening.

  3. Step 3

    Call if the pattern changes

A zone warming faster than it was, a new noise, a dark display or water at the kickplate are reasons to ring before the part turns up.

Past these checks the fault is inside the machine. Call Mercer Island Sub-Zero Service on (206) 208-3377 and say which step changed nothing.

Asked about this

How long will the part take?

We do not quote a delivery date we do not control. Once you approve the repair price, the part is ordered against the model and serial on your rating plate, and the second visit is booked when it is in hand. Call Mercer Island Sub-Zero Service on (206) 208-3377 at any point to ask where the order stands.

Can we keep wine in the unit while we wait?

Often, but it depends on the fault. If one zone is holding and the other drifting, keep the bottles that matter in the zone that holds and watch the other with a probe. If we switched the unit off, it is just a dark cabinet until the part is fitted, and it should not be trusted to protect anything.
